Types of sand casting tools and equipment - Apex Alloy

Updated: Sep 26, 2022

To ensure the efficient operation of numerous types of equipment in practically every industry imaginable, including automotive, aerospace, and agricultural equipment, raw materials must be formed into useful shapes.

Everything from small parts to substantial equipment is made using metal shaping.

The final result can be produced using a variety of technologies, including press braking, stamping, forging, and casting.

Making objects by pouring liquid metal into a mould is known as casting. The mould's shape is imprinted on the metal as it solidifies.

The shape is removed from the mould after cooling, and it might then undergo more machining.

This article examines the various sand casting tools used to accomplish the goal.

What tools are utilized in sand casting?

According to the material and desired product outcome, different pieces of equipment are used during the sand casting process. Equipment and procedures include:

Basic Making:

A core is a preformed insert that is inserted into the casting's outer mould to shape the casting's interior.

To achieve the desired shape, it prevents the material from completely filling the mould. To create the core, one of two methods can be used:

Making hot-box cores:

In this process, the sand mixture's resin binder is heated to activate it, forming the core shape. Sand injection pressures between 0.4 and 0.6 MPa and a maximum sand core weight of 40 kg can be achieved by machines like the KC800, KC600, and KC400.

The High Production 40L Hot Box Machine and the PHB-22 Core Machine are additional choices.

Making cold-box cores:

Instead of using heat, a catalyst is used in this process to chemically bond the sand.

Machines like the 80L Cold-Box Core Making Machine and the 450L Cold-Box Core Making Machine can produce sand cores up to 1,600 1,600 mm in size with a maximum sand injection pressure of 0.6 MPa and a weight of 500 kg.

The Premium CB Series Cold Box Core Machine, which can create cores both horizontally and vertically, is an additional choice.

It comes in sizes of 10, 30, and 60 litres.

Resin-sand method:

A variety of quartz sand that has been combined with resin is known as resin sand. Quartz sand is bound and stiffened by a chemical reaction caused by the resin, producing moulds that are remarkably solid, hard, and strong. For small, medium, or large volumes, this may involve manual moulding equipment or IMF Automatic Molding Lines.

A sand shakeout system, crushing system, cooling process, regeneration system, sand conditioning system, air delivery system, and particulate removal system are examples of possible pieces of equipment.

Using green sand:

Sand can be recycled when using this casting technique. The sand contains no chemical additives.

All that is added is clay and water. Automatic Production Lines and the Z149 Production Line are examples of applicable equipment. Indexing lines, looping lines, and mould car lines are examples of mould handling equipment.

The metal can be transported in various-sized ladles or poured directly from a furnace. The castings and sand are separated using a shakeout system.

While the actual castings are sent to the finishing process, a runner system returns metal to the melt section for reuse. Grinding, trimming, and cutting is examples of finishing.
